We know what an important role nutrition plays in our health and well-being. However, even if we eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly, and take vitamins, it might not be enough.
How can you be certain that you’re getting the correct vitamins and minerals your body needs for optimal wellness? How can you reduce and personalize the pills you take daily?
At the Naturopathic Clinic, we offer SpectraCell Micronutrient testing, the most accurate, scientifically-proven method of assessing nutritional deficiencies. With SpectraCell Micronutrient testing, you get a clear picture of your specific vitamin and nutrient needs so that you may customize your path to wellness.
The SpectraCell Micronutrient test measures 35 specific micronutrients – vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants and metabolites – and how they affect your individual cellular function. Because each body is unique, so should the supplements we take to optimize health. We will use the results of this test, along with a thorough health history, to customize a supplement regimen according to your personal needs and health concerns. SpectraCell testing can be beneficial not only for those on medications that are known to deplete specific nutrients, but also in testing for deficiencies associated with conditions such as type 2 diabetes.
Type 2 Diabetes
Even if you eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, today’s agricultural practices have led to larger, nutrient-poor foods with less vitamin and mineral concentration. Furthermore, those with multiple chronic diseases such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure increase their risk of deficiencies. Individuals with uncontrolled high blood sugar have been shown to have deficiencies in some minerals, notably potassium, magnesium, and zinc. Deficiencies of these minerals along with chromium may predispose one to blood sugar dysregulation.
Type 2 diabetes, especially when poorly controlled, increases oxidative stress in the body. Not only does this cause cellular damage, but it depletes antioxidants such as carotenoids, vitamins E and C, selenium, and some of the B vitamins, notably folate, pyridoxine, and cyanocobalamin. In addition, diabetic drugs such as Metformin and Sulfonylureas deplete certain nutrients. Micronutrient testing takes the guessing game out of your daily supplement routine and allows you to focus only on what you need.
