The Number 1 Tip For Summer Skincare

With COVID-19 keeping us at home, we may be more likely to spend time outside this summer. There is a safe way to get outside and still protect your skin. Skin protection is essential, as skin cancer is the leading cancer diagnosis in the country.

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends use of SPF 30 or higher, which blocks about 97% of the sun’s rays. It is important to reapply every two hours while in sun exposure, even on cloudy Washington days.

When looking for a sunscreen, find a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays as well as one that is water resistant. Sunscreens are made with chemical or physical barriers to protect your skin against the sun. The chemical sunscreens absorb the sun’s rays while physical barriers with ingredients such as zinc or titanium deflect the sun’s rays.

At the Medical Spa at PRO Medical, you can find Elta MD sunscreen – my personal favorite brand of sunscreen. Elta MD Broad Spectrum SPF 44 Oil Free Facial Sunscreen protects against UVA and UVB rays and is water resistant. It comes in a tinted and non-tinted version. I prefer the tinted version as it gives my face a nice even glow, while protecting it from sun damage. In addition, it is moisturizing and hydrating to the skin due to its formulation with hyaluronic acid.

Sun Facts:

  • Sunscreen will help prevent you from developing skin cancer and helps protect against anti-aging.
  • Don’t forget to apply a generous amount to the top of your head, ears, feet and neck- those are commonly missed locations!
  • The sun has the strongest rays between the hours of 10am and 2pm so try to avoid the sun between that time.

Preventative skin examinations by a medical provider are recommended yearly in adults to monitor for any signs of skin cancer. When was your last skin exam? Make an appointment with the Medical Spa at PRO Medical for your yearly skin check.
