We asked our PRO Club childcare experts and preschool teachers for some of their favorite at-home activities that provide great learning opportunities for children. Join us every week as we share more fun learning activities that will help shake up your cabin fever.
What will my child learn? Science, sensory.
Materials:
- Jar with lid like a mason jar
- Water
- White chalk
- Zip lock plastic bag
- Round balloon
- Scissors
- Thick rubber band
Getting Started:
- Pour a little water into the jar. Put the lid on tightly. Leave it for 20 minutes.
- Put white chalk in a zip lock bag. Zip the bag shut.
- Use your hands to crush the chalk into a powder.
- Cut off the neck of the balloon.
- Take off the lid of the jar. Put in the chalk powder.
- Quickly cover the jar with the balloon.
- Put a rubber band around the neck of the jar to keep the baloon streched tight.
- press the baloon down with your fist to crush the air. Hold your hand here for 30 seconds.
- Take away the baloon. What do you see?
Why does this happen?
- Cool air cant hold much water vapor. Some of it condenses to make clouds.
- When you compress the air in your jar, the air becomes warmer. It absorbs more vaporized water.
- When you take away the balloon cover, the air cools. Some of the vaporizes water condenses on the chalk dust. It makes a cloud.
